If you would like to save yourself time and headaches, these points must be kept in mind whilst looking for a web host. The first issue is cost. Try not to give in to web hosts that will offer you hosting for free however. You must always read the fine print and find out what the hidden conditions are.

Quite frequently, free hosting is given only for a short trial period. So make sure not to sign an agreement without checking this out first. The second aspect will be your level of ease with third party advertising. The question you should ask yourself is, would you like your hosting company to show ads on your site over which you have no control?

In the event of a shared/ dedicated hosting you will have to find out whether your host can offer you a money back guarantee. You should also try to find out what the charges for any extra bandwidth will be, disc drive space or email accounts that you could need if your site ever grows. Quite often, hosting companies can charge steep rates for any things that are not part of the basic hosting package.

A good policy will be for you to always read through the reviews and customer feedback to get a broader view of what to expect. These will also be useful indicators of customer satisfaction. Try to look for 24/7 telephone support as it is usually available. You will need this in order to resolve technical problems that could arise during the night for example.

If you live near by, you can try to visit the data center where the hosting company keeps its servers. This could contribute to give you an idea of the scale of the company’s operations. Try to avoid hosting companies that tend to run one or two servers only. Search for companies that can change servers at a pinch if a server fails you.

When you decide to register your domain name, make sure you use an ICANN certified domain registrar. Afterwards, check that only your name is listed as administrative contact with InterNIC for your domain name.

You must also check for the sites hosted on the server. Try to avoid sharing a server with an adult site as it will corner the lion’s share of the bandwidth. It could also lead to your site being blacklisted.

You should always insist for multi-layered security in order to protect your domain from hackers. Despite the fact that the web hosts are not responsible for protecting your code, they should always have contingency plans in order to protect your site from network attacks such as DNS poisoning, cross-site scripting, URL hijacking, spam and attacks from DDoS.

Another very good policy would be to enter into an initial short-term contract. You can make the long–term once you are satisfied with the services offered by your web host. Further to that, your agreement with the hosting company should always be flexible enough to allow you for the possibility of future expansion.
