If you are planning to set up an online store, then you must try to avoid the mistakes that some online stores tend to make. Most of these mistakes are due to ignorance; or of a failure to recognize Internet as a different media. These mistakes include:

1. Bad navigation: Websites must have a professional appearance, able to inspire confidence with their customers. A website that is difficult to navigate will do a great disservice to its customers. The customers will turn away without finding the product that they would like to buy. This occurs especially on messy websites. The purpose should be to make the customer feel able to reach a product he might be interested in with the smallest amount of clicks.

2. Low-key promotion: Several people who run online stores make the mistake not to advertise. They hope that people will find repeatedly their website by accident. You must know however, that if you don’t advertise, you won’t be likely to get customers. You don’t have to spend a lot of money in order to advertise your website. Properly targeted keyword advertisements and e-newsletters are a reasonably priced method of reaching customers.

3. Bad communication: Many online shops don’t post their contact addresses prominently on their websites. This might give customers the impression that there is no way for them to get support and help when they might require it. So remember to always have a contact e-mail address on your website as well as an active customer service team.

4. Lack of freshness: Your website will need regular updates. This will make your website look fresh every time a returning customer visits. You must also research the offers that your competitors make, and modify your sales pitch accordingly.

5. Refusing to invest in SEO: You must try to allocate some money on search engine optimization. This is the best method for you to get new visitors to your website. It has been estimated that 70 percent of online purchases begin with a search at one of the well-liked search engines.

6. No return policy: Ensure that you have a friendly return policy, and that you host it on the site in a prominent way. This will give the customers the confidence that if they do not like the product that they can return it.

7 Irritating registration policy: Do not force your customer to give more personal details than he needs to. Some shops will insist on obtaining information like monthly salary, number of children, job details etc. All these are quite irrelevant and you really shouldn’t expect your customer to provide any personal information which is not relevant to the purchase. Applying all these tips will help you to get an efficient and well-running site.
